You’re browsing through the range of recessed spotlights, and in the specifications, a word pops up that you hadn't expected: spring type. For one model, it says coil springs; for another, leaf springs. Should you pay attention to that? Yes—but not in the way you might think. Because for most spotlights, you don’t choose the spring type yourself. It's part of the fixture, and it helps determine if that spotlight fits your ceiling. Moreover, there's a misconception circulating that sometimes leads people to choose the wrong model or unnecessarily limits their choices because they rule out spotlights with a certain spring type beforehand.
What is the spring for?
A recessed spotlight is not screwed in. It is pushed into a round hole from below and clamps itself in place. The principle is simple: the cover ring presses against the ceiling from below, and the springs push against the ceiling plate from above. So, the plate is, as it were, clamped between the ring and the spring.
Each spring needs space to expand above the plate and operates within a certain clamping range—the ceiling thickness it grips well. This is specified for every spotlight, so you just need to check it.
Do you choose your spring type yourself? Usually not
This is the part that often causes confusion, so let’s clarify it immediately: the spring type belongs to the fixture. The manufacturer determines which springs are included, and for the vast majority of models, it's one fixed system—either coil springs or leaf springs. You cannot change it afterwards.
In our assortment, there are a few exceptions:
- Illuxtron – each spotlight has a variant with coil springs and a variant with leaf springs. Same fixture, different spring type: you simply choose the version that fits your ceiling.
- Wever & Ducré – for many of their recessed spotlights, you can also choose between a version with leaf springs and one with coil springs.
- Snaxx and Snax by Lucide Premium – for these models, both spring types are included, so you decide on the spot which works best.
For all other spotlights, the rule is: you choose a fixture, and the spring type comes with it. This is precisely why it's worth knowing what each system does. It's a selection criterion when choosing your spotlight, not an option you check separately.
Coil springs: the curved wire springs
Coil springs are the U-shaped spring wire brackets you see on either side of the spotlight. You fold them up along the housing, push the spotlight into the hole, and as soon as they pass through the opening, they spring open and pull the spotlight tightly against the ceiling.
Strengths
- They clamp over a wider range of ceiling thicknesses.
- They maintain tension. Even if the plate shifts slightly or isn't perfectly flat, the spring keeps the spotlight flush against the ceiling.
- The vast majority of available products use them, so your choice of models and prices is greatest.
- They are ideally suited for a false ceiling, for example, made of plasterboard: they have enough space to open there and easily find purchase on the plate.
Points to consider
- Installation requires two hands: you must hold the springs together, guide the spotlight into the hole, and only then release.
- When removing, the spring can snap back onto your fingers. That hurts, and it happens more often than you think.
- The spring points can damage the plasterboard around the hole during installation and removal.
- They need a fair amount of free height to open. In a tight cavity or against a beam, this becomes difficult.
- They were not originally designed for solid ceilings. In a smooth bore in solid concrete, they find little grip.
Leaf springs: the flat spring strips
Leaf springs are flat strips of spring steel mounted against the housing. They work on the same principle but press against the top of the plate with their full length instead of with a point.
Strengths
- The clamping force is distributed over a larger surface. This is gentler on the ceiling material and provides a tighter, more even connection of the ring.
- They open less far and therefore require less free space above the ceiling.
- They also grip the wall of a drilled hole, making them excellent for solid ceilings—and they remain perfectly usable in a false ceiling.
- The spotlight is firmly secured and does not move if someone bumps into it.
Points to consider
- Here too, you need two hands: you must keep the springs neatly along the housing while pushing the spotlight into the hole.
- The clamping range is usually more narrowly defined. Following the specified ceiling thickness is more important here than with coil springs.
The biggest misconception: "leaf springs are only for solid ceilings"
We hear this constantly. Someone reads somewhere that leaf springs are "specially designed for concrete," concludes that they therefore don't belong in a false ceiling, and thus removes good spotlights from their list.
That is incorrect. Leaf springs do indeed work excellently in concrete. But "excellent in concrete" is not the same as "only in concrete": it is an additional strength, not a limitation.
In a false or suspended ceiling, leaf springs do exactly what they were made for—they clamp the plate between the spring and the cover ring, just like a coil spring. In fact, in plasterboard, they have a real advantage: they distribute the pressure over a larger surface and are therefore gentler on a plate that cannot withstand much on its own.
There is even a ceiling type where it is the other way around: in a stretch ceiling, only leaf springs are used. Anyone who rules out leaf springs beforehand immediately excludes themselves from this option.

If you are working with a false or suspended ceiling, you don't need to exclude any model: both systems work there. Just look at the spotlight you like.
If you are working with solid concrete or a stretch ceiling, you will end up with leaf springs. The same applies if there is little space above the ceiling, or if your ceiling is made of thin plasterboard and you need to remove the spotlights later: leaf springs are gentler on the plate in that case.
Five practical installation tips
- Take a look at the clamping range. For each spotlight, the ceiling thickness for which the springs are designed is indicated. A simple comparison with your own ceiling is sufficient.
- Measure the free space above the plate. In addition to the built-in depth of the spotlight, also account for the space needed for the springs, cable, and possibly the driver.
- Cut precisely to size. A hole that is one or two millimeters too large will cause the spring to slide on the edge instead of on the plate surface.
- Keep your fingers away from the spring arm. When removing a spotlight with coil springs, the spring will snap back as soon as it passes through the hole. Pull the spotlight down and grasp the spring on the outside, not in between.
- First, test one spotlight. If it sits flush and flat against the ceiling, then proceed with the rest.
Frequently asked questions
Can I choose whether my spotlight has coil springs or leaf springs? For most models, no: the fixture comes with one fixed spring type. With Illuxtron and many spotlights from Wever & Ducré, there is indeed a version with coil springs and one with leaf springs, and for the Snaxx and Snax from Lucide Premium, both types are included.
Can I install recessed spotlights with leaf springs in a false ceiling? Yes, without problems. Leaf springs work perfectly in a false or suspended ceiling.
Are coil springs less strong than leaf springs? Not necessarily. Modern coil springs are much sturdier than their predecessors. The difference lies in how they clamp: point-wise versus distributed over a larger area.
